Driving Practical Test

You need to pass your theory test before taking the practical driving test. 


Once you have passed your driving theory test, you can give your practical test whenever you are ready and confident. However, if you fail your practical driving test, you can book the next available date. You can use the following links to find your nearest practical driving test centre and book the practical driving test

What do you need

  • Your Great Britain or Northern Ireland provisional driving licence number
  • Your email address to get your booking confirmation - you can’t book online if you don’t have one.
  • You may be able to book via UK phone (0300 200 11 22 - check call charges)
  • A debit or credit card for paying the test fee




Changing Dates

You must plan 3 working days ahead if you want to change your practical driving test date. Sundays and public holidays don’t count as working days. You can change your appointment for up to 6 times. After that you’ll have to cancel your test and book a new one. 

To change the dates for your driving practical test, you will need:

  • Great Britain or Northern Ireland driving licence number

  • Application reference number

Do not forget to check the new date with your instructor before rebooking the test.

Preparing for driving test

The practical driving test assesses your ability to drive safely on different road and in different traffic conditions. You also need to demonstrate that you are aware of the Highway Code and you need to show that throughout your driving. The drving test lasts on an average from 30 to 45 minutes. 

You need to take driving lessons from a qualified & approved driving instructor (ADI) or you can also take lessons from the trainee driving instructor. The instructor holds a green badge if they are qualified and approved, while they hold pink badge if they are a trainee. There is no minimum number of lessons you need to learn driving. The number of lessons depends upon how quickly you can learn driving. 

You can also practice driving with your friends and family. However, make sure the person you are practicing with is 

  • 21 year old or above
  • is qualiifed to drive the type of veichal you want to learn in. For Example, they must have a manual car licence, if they are supervising you in a manual car
  • they held the full UK licence for more than 3 years
  • the car insurance policy of supervisor covers you as a learner driver
  • car have the correct size L plate in red color and white background at front and back of the car. (In Wales, you can use D plate)

Without proper insurance, you can be banned from driving, can get unlimiited fine and can get upto 8 penalty points.


On the day of driving practical test

Do not forget to carry the following documents on the day of your drving practical test

  • Provisional photocard licence
  • Photo identity like your passport
  • Driving theory test pass certificate


The driving test lasts for 30 to 45 minutes approximately. However, If you’re taking an extended test pass because of a driving disqualification, the test will last 70 minutes.

The test consist of following items that can be asked in any combinations depending upon the examiner. 

  • Eyesight Check: You will be asked to read a number plate from a distance of 20.5 meters. You could be failed for your test if you are not able to read the number correctly.
  • Show me/Tell me Questions: The show me tell me are questions related to veichal safety. The  examier will ask you to show or tell how you will carry out veichal safety checks like minimum thread depth, oil level, etc. A detailed list of show me tell me questions can be found at this link.

  • Independent Driving: The independent driving section usually lasts for 10 -15 minutes approximately. During independent driving, you either follow signs to particualr destination or verbal directions or combination of both.   • Maneuvers: There are four major maneuvers usually asked in the test.

Lesson's that are cancelled within 24 hours will be charged at the normal hourly lesson rate
